Walking your talk with integrity and honesty is one of the most meaningful (and sometimes uncomfortable) parts of living by your values. It’s easy to say what matters to us. The harder work is making sure our actions reflect it, especially when truth, kindness, and courage collide.

I’ve had people tell me, “The trouble with you is that you’re too transparent — what you’re thinking shows all over your face.”

This always catches me out, because honestly, I think transparency is one of my better traits.

People quickly learn that I’m open and honest. And doesn’t that build trust? I certainly think so — especially in coaching. It’s hard to connect with someone who feels like a performance.

But is being so readable ever a disadvantage? Poker, perhaps. And, although I can play a decent game of Cluedo if I concentrate, in real life I find it almost impossible to bluff. And I quite like that about myself.

Still… transparency raises an important question:

Where is the line between being honest and being unkind?

Is it OK to tell someone the truth if you know it will hurt them? And, if you don’t tell the truth, are you still walking your talk when it comes to integrity?

Integrity Isn’t Brutality

I’ve come to believe it’s never OK to cause harm if there’s another way. That’s different from avoidance.

Avoidance is holding back because of the consequences to you — discomfort, conflict, disapproval. However, when a hurtful truth isn’t necessary, choosing not to say it may be less about fear… and more about kindness.

Of course, sometimes the truth is necessary, even when it stings. But integrity asks us to speak with care, not cruelty.

Integrity Is Alignment

Integrity isn’t about grand gestures. It’s about whether your words and actions match — especially in the small, quiet moments when no one is watching.

Walking your talk means living the values you speak, even when it feels uncomfortable.

Honesty Without Harm

Truth can be a gift, but it can also be a weapon. Integrity means asking:

  • Is this true?

  • Is it necessary?

  • Is it kind?

  • Is this the right moment?

Sometimes, the most honest thing we can do is pause before speaking.

Reflection Prompts

  • Do my words and actions match when no one is watching?

  • Do I encourage honesty in others while steering clear of hard truths myself?

  • Where do I over-promise and under-deliver — and why?

  • Am I holding back out of kindness… or fear?

Something to Try…

Notice one area where your words and actions don’t totally align. This week, close the gap gently:

  • Follow through

  • Reset an unrealistic promise

  • Speak a difficult truth with kindness

  • Or simply admit, “I don’t have capacity right now”.

Integrity doesn’t require perfection; it just needs presence.

Closing Thought

Integrity grows within the quiet places, where your values are tested and lived. Not in big declarations, but in everyday moments where you choose alignment over avoidance, honesty over performance, and kindness over harm.

And that is walking your talk.

A Next Step…

If this resonates — if you’re noticing places where your life feels slightly out of alignment, or where honesty, kindness, and integrity feel complicated — you don’t have to untangle it alone.

My coaching is values-based, which means we start with what truly matters to you, and explore how to live and lead from that place with more clarity, confidence, and authenticity.

If you’d like to have a gentle, no-pressure conversation about what you need right now, you’re warmly invited to book a free discovery call.

Sometimes the smallest step towards alignment is simply talking it through.
