Sometimes the hardest part of moving forward is not a lack of motivation. It is the feeling that there are no real choices available to you.

When life becomes focused on survival, responsibility, burnout or simply getting through the day, our needs can begin to override our values. We stop asking ourselves what we truly want because the immediate priority becomes coping. Over time, this can create a quiet sense of disconnection from ourselves. Not because we have failed, but because there has been little space left for imagination, possibility or choice.

A vision board can help reconnect you with those things again.

Am I ready to create a vision board?

Contrary to popular belief, a vision board is not about demanding perfection from yourself or pretending life is magically easy. It is not about manifesting luxury holidays or becoming a completely different person overnight. At its heart, a vision board is simply a visual reminder of what matters to you.

It helps you pause long enough to ask:

What do I want more of in my life?

What feels important to me now?

How would “better” actually look like for me?

Sometimes the answers are big dreams. Sometimes they are much smaller: more peace, creativity, rest, honesty, freedom, time outdoors or more moments that feel like your life rather than a list of obligations. 

When you can see those things in front of you, they become easier to move towards.

That matters because progress is rarely one giant leap. More often, it is a series of small decisions taken in the direction you want to go. A vision board can act as a gentle reminder that even tiny steps still count. Even when circumstances cannot change immediately, you can begin to reconnect with your values, your hopes and the version of yourself that may have been buried beneath responsibility and exhaustion.

The board itself is not the goal. The goal is remembering that your future is not fixed.

Even one small step towards the life you want is still progress.

Where do I start?

A vision board is a powerful way to visualise your goals, dreams, and values. By creating a collage of images, words, and symbols that represent the life you want to create, you engage your imagination and emotions, both of which make your goals feel more tangible and achievable.

Step 1: Clarify Your Focus

Before gathering materials, take time to reflect:

  • What areas of your life would you like to focus on? (e.g. career, relationships, health, creativity, learning, adventure, wellbeing, spirituality)

  • What values do you want to live by?

  • What dreams or intentions excite you for the next chapter of your life?

Tip: Write down 3–5 intentions or themes to guide your vision board.

Step 2: Gather Your Materials

You can create your vision board physically or digitally.

For a physical board:

  • Large sheet of card or cork board

  • Magazines, newspapers, printed images, quotes, or personal photos

  • Scissors, glue, tape, coloured pens, stickers, washi tape (optional)

For a digital board:

  • Canva, Pinterest, Miro, or other design platforms

  • Online images, graphics and inspirational quotes

Step 3: Collect Images & Words

Look for images, symbols, and words that resonate emotionally, not just logically.

Ask yourself:

  • Does this image make me feel excited, calm, inspired, or motivated?

  • Does it reflect a value I want to honour?

  • Could I see this as part of my future?

Don’t worry if your board looks eclectic. It should feel alive and personal, not perfect.

Step 4: Arrange & Create

  • Place the most important themes or images at the centre or top of your board.

  • Cluster related ideas together (e.g. health images in one area, career inspiration in another).

  • Leave some blank space for new dreams and growth.

  • Add affirmations, quotes, or words that inspire you.

Step 5: Place Your Board Where You’ll See It

  • Physical board: somewhere you’ll notice daily — by your desk, beside your bed, or in a calm, reflective spot.

  • Digital board: set it as your phone or laptop wallpaper, or print a copy for your wall.

Seeing it often keeps your intentions alive and strengthens the connection between imagination and action.

Step 6: Use It as a Living Tool

  • Spend a few moments each week looking at your board and noticing how it makes you feel.

  • Ask yourself: What small step can I take this week to bring one part of this vision closer?

  • Add or change images as your goals evolve — it’s a living, flexible reflection of your journey.
